Job Description

NuVasive is seeking an experienced Mechanical or Biomedical Engineer for our Interbody and Access Development team.  Our team is part of a larger mechanical engineering group that focuses on complex interbody and retractor systems, that utilizes extensive knowledge of mechanisms, engineering practices, mathematics, material science, and other physical sciences to create implant and instrument systems designed for use in the OR.

As a seasoned mechanical engineering professional, you’ll gain hands on experience to devise innovative mechanical product solutions to meet surgeon needs and design specifications, from concept to commercialization.  Working on cross-functional teams to manage the product development process, project timeline and deliverables is key to this role, as you’ll often interact with other internal teams, including marketing, purchasing, regulatory, quality, research and testing, and machine shop, to ensure designs comply with applicable FDA and state regulations, as well as standards including, but not limited to, ISO 13485.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Create and support the development of prototypes using in-house rapid prototyping equipment or by outsourcing to external vendors/suppliers.
  • Define, Create, and maintain design control documentation in compliance with FDA regulations and internal procedures.
  • Interact with external teams, including outside manufacturers, raw material suppliers, and outside testing facilities, to solve technical issues/challenges and ensure on time delivery of services and product.
  • Support new product launches by attending surgical cases, supporting our in-house surgeon education team with cadaver labs.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent
  • 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Hands-on experience in translating functional requirements into functional mechanical solutions
  • Experience with the CAD development environment, component data sheets, and mechanical test methods and equipment
  • Strong ability to understand and apply GD&T
  • Experience with manufacturing processes and design for manufacturing
  • Effective communication skills with strong confidence to present before groups of customers, vendors, peers, and leadership.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office with a strong ability to write business reports and correspondence as well as the ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, employees, and management of organization
  • Proficient in developing test plans, protocols/test scripts, and test reports.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Medical device experience, specifically spine.
  • Previous manufacturing experience in metal machining or equivalent.
