Job Description

As a Manufacturing Engineer at NuVasive, you’ll develop, implement and maintain methods, operation sequences and processes in the manufacturing or fabrication of parts, components, sub-assemblies and final assemblies. You will be responsible for supporting new initiatives in the arena of additive manufacturing. Advanced knowledge is required to lead the development of Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) processes in this hands-on role. Responsibilities will also include participation in design reviews, design transfers to production as it relates to development of manufacturing processes, post processing development, equipment and process validations, process definitions for machine operation and maintenance requirements, test and inspection methods, fixturing, gauging and process control techniques.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead new additive manufacturing capital equipment setup activities, including preparing facilities, supporting machine installations and related commissioning activities including validations, as well as file creation and preparation software
  • Conduct process development activities, including creation of SOPs for machine and/or equipment operation for PBF machines and associated post processing operations
  • Perform design reviews that incorporate a detail-oriented perspective on the impact of specific PBF processes on surface finish, dimensional accuracy and overall integrity of produced parts
  • Develop best practices for designs to be manufactured using PBF processes and educate other internal organizations regarding capabilities and best practices
  • Support implementation of manufacturing changes that require qualification and/or validation of new equipment or processes
  • Drive process improvements affecting yields, capacity, cycle times and cost
  • Interface with suppliers on technical issues causing inefficiencies, waste or potential supply chain interruptions
  • Develop business processes, departmental metrics and tracking tools
  • Review designs and prints in both development and production phases to assure effective use of DFM/DFA/DFI and collaborate with appropriate cross-functional teams
  • Develop and deliver training materials in areas identified that require increased organizational awareness and/or functional knowledge
  • Lead CAPA process for non-conforming material reports, out of tolerance reports and product complaints that result from manufacturing issues
  • Perform duties in compliance with applicable regulations and standards including FDA Quality System Regulation 21 CFR 820, ISO 13485, and the European Medical Device Directive
Basic Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree
    • 2+ years of related experience
    • Excellent analytical problem solving and technical writing
    • Effective cross-functional communicator with both internal and external customers
    • Ability to read and interpret complex mechanical drawings including advanced Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) applications
    • Strong understanding and usage of Change Control Processes
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
    Preferred Qualifications
      • Experience in 3D metal printing and software applications including operation of PBF machines, preferably 3D Systems ProX DMP 320/350
      • Knowledge in traditional metal removal manufacturing processes is desirable, especially CNC milling and turning of Titanium, Stainless Steels and PEEK
      • Other process knowledge including injection molding, electronics manufacturing and assembly, welding, anodization, blasting, laser marking, passivation and assembly
